Beginner's Guide to Pickleball in Chennai
By Pit Stop Sports · Updated 20 September 2026
Pickleball combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis on a small court with a paddle and a perforated plastic ball. It is quick to learn, easy on the joints and social — which is why groups across Chennai are picking it up. Here is what you need to know before your first game.
The basics
- The court is 20 × 44 feet — about a quarter of a tennis court — with a 34-inch net at the centre.
- Games are played to 11 points, win by two; only the serving side scores.
- The serve is underhand and must land diagonally beyond the "kitchen" (the non-volley zone next to the net).
- After the serve, each side must let the ball bounce once before volleys are allowed (the two-bounce rule).
Gear
A paddle, a few outdoor or indoor pickleballs, and non-marking court shoes are enough to start. Comfortable sportswear is fine.
Where to play in Chennai
Pit Stop Sports in Kovur has an indoor pickleball court that is booked by the hour and is open 24 hours, which suits beginners who want a quiet slot to practise. Book online, arrive ten minutes early, and ask the desk about equipment if you do not have your own.
Tips for your first session
- Start with dinks — soft shots into the kitchen — to get a feel for the ball.
- Stay behind the kitchen line unless the ball bounces there.
- Play doubles: it is the easiest format to learn.
